The veil is a symbol with multiple meanings. The story of “Al Hijab” goes way back in time. This element of the costume  had been appropriated very early by men in religious and political contexts. From the 2nd millennium BC, with the beginning of private property and legacy, the veil had been used to cover the head of the bride in wedding ceremonies but also to cover the body of a married woman, especially her hair. Centuries later, the monotheistic religions reclaimed these customs in a theological argument and especially Christianity at that time.

So the so-called Veil in the West, connected today with Islam, existed long before Islam.
The conference will tackle the veil from an archaeological and historical perspective and traces the history and social dimensions of the veil throughout the centuries.
