The role and purpose of museums have changed since they started as private collections of wealthy individuals, displayed on rare occasions for adulation by the masses. Today, we don’t want visitors to walk reverently through the galleries anymore.  Instead, we want them to talk and explore and discuss and consider the objects on display.

Using Harvard University’s Graduate School of Education Project Zero Thinking Routines, the Dar al-Athar al-Islamiyyah (DAI) is implementing interactive museum visits for individuals of all ages, classrooms and community groups.

This presentation will introduce the project and will discuss how we are redefining museum visits and, hopefully, encourage educators and visitors to change their thinking when visiting a museum.
