The Young Artisan - The Art of Decorating Old Houses with Gypsum Workshop

As part of the "The Young Artisan" program, Al Jasra Handicrafts Centre organises The Art of Decoration & Engraving on Gypsum workshop. Bahrain has been famous since old times for its architecture which is characterised by an aesthetic uniqueness where the artisans and artists engaged in and have excelled while preserving the spirit of Bahrain authentic character. The beauty that characterises this architecture in Bahrain are the gypsum engravings which covered the houses. They represent the most salient features of the conventional architecture in Bahrain, especially if we consider their precision, elegance and power, which reflect the creativity and rich imagination of the Bahraini artisan. The workshop covers learning about the art of gypsum decoration in old homes.

Workshop topics include:

  • Identifying old houses.
  • Identify the materials used in building old houses.
  • Identify the types of gypsum decorations in ancient homes.
  • Decoration of house models and then coloring them.

Workshop Outcomes:

A model of an old house with gypsum decorations.
