Al Jasra Crafts Centre holds a workshop on the Art of Decoration & Engraving on Gypsum. Bahrain has long been known for its architecture, characterised by a unique aesthetic that artisans and craftsmen have excelled in, preserving the authentic Bahraini character. One of the most beautiful features of Bahraini architecture is the gypsum carvings that adorned houses, especially those owned by prominent families in Bahrain, which still stand in major cities like Muharraq and Manama. These carvings represent one of the most important aspects of traditional architecture in Bahrain, particularly notable for their precision, elegance, and strength, reflecting the creativity and imagination of Bahraini craftsmen.

Workshop details:

First Day:

  • The history of decoration and engraving on gypsum in Bahrain.
  • Identify the material gypsum.
  • Artistic examples of decoration used in Bahrain.

Second Day:

  • The necessary tools for the art of decoration and engraving on gypsum.
  • Types of engraving
  • Identify some Bahraini gypsum decorations.

Third Day:

  • Draw and design an ornament on paper.
  • Applying decoration to gypsum molds.

Workshop outcome:

  • Production of hand-carved gypsum decoration units.
