Pioneering music band Tinariwen from Mali played a concert at the Cultural Hall on Thursday (April 3rd) as part of the 2016 Spring of Culture season. Formed in 1979, the band, whose name means “Deserts” in the local dialect spoken in that region, is considered the innovator of the “African Blues” genre, a unique style which echoes the band members’ traditional Tuareg musical heritage fused with elements from other regional and international influences. The band played a selection of new material and past hits, including tracks from their 2011 album Tassili which won a Grammy Award for Best World Music Album and Best Group in the Songlines Music Awards.
