Bahrain Culture & Antiquities Authority is to dismantle the 8,000 meters tent near Bahrain National Museum, which hosted many cultural events and played a significant role in promoting Bahrain as a pioneering cultural destination during the summer. For six months the tent welcomed the Bahrain 17th International Book Fair, the 24th Annual Heritage Festival and the Bahrain Summer Festival 2016. BACA succeeded with their summer program with the support of the Al-Baddad International Group who built the 8,000 square meter tent along with another company who designed a 50 meter-wooden bridge connecting both Bahrain National Museum and the tent amid a beautiful scenery.
The curtain fell on the 2016 edition of the Bahrain Summer Festival; the festival comes as part of a wider strategic initiative spearheaded by the Bahrain Authority for Culture & Antiquities (BACA) to boost Bahrain’s position as a regional cultural tourism hub. Held under the theme ‘Bahrain Your Destination’, the multi-recreational events, which started six months ago and mostly organized inside the tent, have come to an end.
In March 2016 the tent hosted the Bahrain International Book Fair, which has always been under the gracious patronage of His Royal Highness Prime Minister Prince Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa, and in the presence of Jordan as a guest of honor. Indeed, the Bahrain International Book Fair has presented an exceptional image with fresh titles and new publications from over 380 publishing houses distributed among more than 450 stands and over 8000 square meters covering a wide range of topics, interests, and age groups.
In April 2016, the Bahrain Authority for Culture & Antiquities paid homage to the memory of all those who were once involved and contributed to the golden age of the pearl trade in Bahrain. Held under the High Patronage of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, themed ‘Rhythms of Bahrain’, the 24th Annual Heritage Festival offered its visitors an immersive sensory experience highlighting the various memories that have shaped life on the island during the pearling era.
The different aspects related to pearling were featured and experienced through sounds and rhythm. Four art installations took central stage and engaged the visitors with the traditional sailors’ songs and the conversations they had with their families and beloved ones. In addition, the festival paid tribute to all members of the community who have played a vital role in preserving our unique cultural heritage and distinguished traditions throughout our shared history, from the various craftsmen practicing their trades, to the traditional folk songs and musical performances. The festival culminated in a vibrant and lively space with a market showcasing Bahraini products and food and as well as a children’s program.
During July and August 2016, the tent attracted more than 80,000 people who flocked to Cultural Hall as well Nakhool Tent at the Bahrain National Museum. BACA offered locals and tourists an exciting and entertaining lineup of events, from 7 July till 7 August.
While works are underway to dismantle the tent, Bahrain Authority for Culture & Antiquities (BACA) is working on its new cultural agenda for the coming year. Indeed, BACA is deploying strenuous efforts to welcome the Bahrain International Music Festival, celebrating its 25th Anniversary. In addition, boat trips from the Bahrain National Museum to Bu Maher Fort located in Muharraq will resume after dismantling the tent.
